Shingles & Squares
Bundles, squares and waste for a roof of a given size and pitch.
Roofing material is sold by the square — 100 square feet of roof surface. Not 100 square feet of ground, and that distinction is where most estimates fail.
A 40 × 30 ft house covers 1,200 ft² on the ground. The roof over it, at an 8/12 pitch, is 1,442 ft². That is two and a half squares of shingle nobody ordered.
The pitch factor is not an estimate
factor = √(1 + (rise ÷ 12)²)
4/12 gives 1.054. 6/12 gives 1.118. 8/12 gives 1.202. 12/12 gives 1.414. It is the hypotenuse of the roof triangle and there is no judgement in it — which makes it the most reliable number in the whole estimate.
Waste is a property of the roof shape
Ten percent on a simple gable, where the only cuts are at the rakes. Fifteen on a hip roof, which cuts along every hip. Twenty on anything with valleys and dormers, where a fifth of what you buy ends up in the dumpster.
Quoting one waste figure for all roofs is how a cut-up roof comes up short.
The two lines that get left off every estimate
Starter course along every eave and rake, and hip and ridge cap along the top. Both are separate products. Cutting up field shingles to use as starter voids most manufacturers' wind warranties, and that is discovered at the claim rather than at the register.
Tear-off is half the job
A single layer of asphalt shingle weighs 200–350 lb per square. A 30-square roof is around four tons of material to strip, carry down and skip — and on a second layer, double it. That line belongs in the budget before the shingle line does.
The one thing to check before anything else
Whether you can stand on it. Above 8/12 most people cannot, and roof jacks or scaffolding change the economics of doing it yourself more than any material price does.

Roof Waste Factor by Shape: Why 10% Is Right for a Gable and Wrong for Everything ElseWaste is not a safety margin. It is the material a roof shape physically destroys, and it is a property of the shape rather than of the estimator's confidence.
Labor Cost to Install Roof Shingles: $280–$336 per Square of a Typical $560 RoofOn an asphalt re-roof, labor costs more than the shingles. Pitch, height and local wages set most of it, and all three can be checked before a quote arrives.
Roof Repair Cost: $300 to $1,500 for Most Repairs, and When Replacing Costs LessA roof repair usually costs a few hundred dollars and a replacement about $14,000, so repair looks right almost every time. The cost per year shows when it is not.
Asphalt Shingle Roof Replacement Cost: $300 to $1,600 per Square, by Shingle GradeThe grade of shingle moves the price of an asphalt roof more than any other choice. Architectural shingles at about $560 per square are the default for a reason that shows up in the cost per year.
Roof Replacement Cost per Square: $380–$900, or $3.80–$9.00 per Square Foot of RoofPrice per square is the one number that makes two roofing quotes comparable. About $560 is typical for architectural shingles; what matters is what that figure includes and how many squares it is multiplied by.
How Many Bundles of Shingles per Square? Three, Except When It Is Four or FiveThree bundles per square is the answer for most of what is stacked at the store. It is wrong often enough to be worth checking before you load the truck.
How to Measure a Roof From the Ground, Accurately Enough to Order FromYou need three measurements and none of them require getting on the roof. Two of them can be taken from the driveway.
How Many Squares Is My Roof? The Two Numbers Nobody MeasuresYour house covers 1,200 square feet of ground. Your roof is not 12 squares, and the gap is bigger than most people budget for.
