Replacing fascia and soffit costs $15 to $30 per linear foot, and repairing a damaged section costs $6 to $20 per linear foot. The most common job, a 30-foot section of rotten wood near a gutter, runs about $900. Replacing the full roof edge of a 60 × 30 ft gable ranch, about 200 linear feet, comes to roughly $3,000 to $6,000.

What fascia and soffit are
Fascia is the vertical board fixed to the ends of the rafters along the roof edge. The gutter hangs on it, and the drip edge of the roof laps over its top.
Soffit is the horizontal panel that closes the underside of the overhang, between the fascia and the house wall. Vented soffit panels are the air intake for most attic ventilation systems.
Both fail from water. A gutter that overflows or pulls away soaks the back of the fascia, ice dams push meltwater behind it, and a roof edge without drip edge lets water run down the face of the board. The rot starts where the water sits, which is usually behind the gutter and not visible from the ground.

These are Fixr's figures. Two other published ranges look lower because they count less: SquareDash prices fascia replacement at $5–$15 per foot, and Homewyse's May 2026 estimate for fascia boards is $8.53–$13.02 per foot, excluding removal of the old boards and general contractor overhead, which Homewyse puts at 13–22% when it applies.
Wood is the cheapest to buy and needs paint every few years. PVC, fiber cement and aluminum cost more and do not rot, which matters most on the stretch behind the gutter.
How many feet a house has
Fascia runs along every roof edge: the eaves and, on a gable house, the sloped rakes at each end. Soffit runs along the same edges wherever there is an overhang underneath.
For the 60 × 30 ft single-story house used across this site, with an 18-inch overhang and a 6/12 pitch:

Each rake is the slope length of half the roof width: 16.5 ft across at 6/12 rises 8.25 ft, so the rake is 18.4 ft. The roof pitch multiplier chart gives the same result for any pitch.

Fixr's $900 example for 30 feet works out to $30 per foot, the top of the replacement range, because both boards are replaced over a short, awkward length with a minimum charge for the visit.
Repair or replace
Repair a section when the damage is local: soft wood within a few feet of a gutter outlet or an inside corner, a split board, or a soffit panel pushed in by animals. The damaged length is cut out and a new piece is joined in, then painted to match.
Replace the run when soft wood shows at several points along the same edge, when paint is peeling across the whole length, or when pests have been in the boards. Short repairs spaced along a rotting edge cost more per foot than one continuous replacement.
Covering rotten wood with aluminum trim does not repair it. The metal cladding hides the damage and keeps moisture against the wood. Cladding over sound, dry wood is a normal low-maintenance finish; cladding over soft wood is a later replacement bill.
Lines usually quoted with it
- Gutters. They have to come down to replace fascia behind them. Reinstalling old gutters adds labor; replacing them at the same time avoids paying for that twice. See gutter replacement cost.
- Drip edge. A roof edge with no drip edge will rot new fascia the same way. Drip edge length and cost covers that line.
- Vented soffit. Replacing solid soffit with vented panels changes how much air enters the attic. Intake has to match exhaust; soffit intake vs exhaust balance covers the ratio.
- Labor at an hourly rate. Fixr puts carpenter labor for this work at $75–$150 per hour, which is how short or awkward sections are often billed.
Fascia, soffit and a new roof
A roof replacement is the cheapest time to fix the roof edge: the old drip edge is off, the gutters are usually down, and the crew is already on staging. Asking for fascia and soffit to be inspected and priced per foot in the roofing contract avoids a separate trip. Roof replacement cost lists what the base roofing price leaves out.
