Replacing gutters costs $6 to $12 per linear foot installed for seamless aluminum, the most common choice, $4 to $8 for vinyl and $20 to $30 for copper. A single-story ranch with gutters along two eaves needs about 126 feet; with the old gutters removed and four downspouts, that job comes to roughly $1,200 to $2,400.

These figures are SquareDash's 2026 prices. Fixr's per-foot prices are close: vinyl $5–$10, aluminum $7–$13, steel $7–$12, copper $18–$32.
Seamless aluminum is formed on site from a coil into one piece per run, so the only joints are at corners and downspout outlets. Sectional gutters come in fixed lengths joined with connectors, cost less, and leak at the joints as the sealant ages.
Why published totals disagree
SquareDash puts the national average for replacing gutters at $1,500–$2,500, for a typical house with 150–200 linear feet. Fixr gives a national average of $3,223, in a range of $2,320–$4,222, for 200 linear feet.
Divided by 200 feet, Fixr's range works out to $11.60–$21.11 per foot, above its own per-foot material prices. A whole-job total includes whatever the estimate counts: downspouts, corners, removal of the old system, and the contractor's minimum charge. Homewyse's May 2026 estimate of $10.41–$15.77 per linear foot excludes repairs to the wood behind the gutter, general contractor overhead, sales tax and permits.
The comparison that works is price per foot for the same scope: the same material, the same number of downspouts, and removal either included or not.
Measuring the gutter run
Gutters run along the eaves, the horizontal edges where water leaves the roof. They do not run along the sloped rake edges of a gable end.
For the 60 × 30 ft single-story house used across this site, with an 18-inch overhang:

Downspouts are measured separately, by wall height. A single-story wall is about 10 feet from gutter to ground.

On the gable house, vinyl gutters instead of aluminum would be $504–$1,008 for the gutter line, and copper $2,520–$3,780.
Lines that change the quote
- Rotten fascia behind the gutter. Gutters hang on the fascia board, and water that has overflowed for years rots it. SquareDash prices fascia replacement at $5–$15 per linear foot. A contractor who finds soft wood after the old gutters come off will add it; fascia and soffit replacement cost covers that line.
- Gutter guards: $7–$20 per linear foot installed. On the 126-foot gable house, $882–$2,520 — often more than the gutters.
- Extra downspouts. Long runs and valleys that dump water onto one section need more outlets. Each adds a length of downspout at the per-foot rate.
- Second story. Longer ladders or staging, and longer downspouts at the same per-foot price.

A repair is the right spend when the problem is local: a few leaking joints on sectional gutters, a run pulled loose by ice or a ladder, or a clogged outlet. New gutters make sense when the metal is split or rusted along its length, most joints are leaking, the gutter is undersized for the roof above it, or the fascia behind it has to be replaced anyway.

Gutters and a new roof
A roof replacement installs new drip edge at the eaves, and the gutter hangs just below it. When a re-roof is planned within a few years, installing the gutters after the roof avoids taking new gutters down and putting them back. Drip edge length and cost covers that part of the roof edge, and roof replacement cost the roof itself.
